Hellmuth out at WSOP

Jul 14, 2008

Phil Hellmuth was knocked out of the World Series of Poker. That leaves the tournament with no former winners.

There were 27 players left on Monday and they will get down to a final table of nine. Play will then be suspended until Nov. 9 so television can broadcast it in the fall.

The winner will earn $9.1 million.

Earlier in the tournament, Hellmuth, who won the main event in 1989, was told he would have to sit out round one round (nine hands) for “berating another player.” Hellmuth criticized Cristian Dragomir of Romania Saturday night after a successful bluff in which Dragomir reraised with just a pair of tens.

“Listen buddy, you’re an idiot. … This is the main event and you are the worst player in the world,” said Hellmuth, who folded on the hand.

But after an official review it was decided the penalty was “excessive.”
