New moves to legalise online poker in USA

New moves to legalise online poker in USA
Thursday, 5 February 2009

A top US Democrat is working on removing stringent anti-online gambling legislation passed through by the departing Bush administration just hours before President Obama took office.

Barney Frank, who is chairman of the House financial services committee, told a major British newspaper that in the next few weeks he plans to reintroduce a bill establishing legal operation and regulation of US online casinos and poker sites.

Congress passed the UIGEA two years ago. This tightened the laws against online gambling and saw some industry executives arrested. On January 19 the laws became finalised but do not need to be adhered to until the end of this year.

“I expect an Obama Department of Justice to be less zealous about locking people up. These outrageous arrests in transit - they should be stopping that stuff,” Mr. Frank said.
