With all this doom and gloom Gambling911.com has been reporting about poker pros in dire straits due to the financial crisis, it's good to see that young ‘em Shannon Shorr may be taking some time off from playing online poker as he's "in a place financially where, honestly, I don't need to play much." Shannon started his career 3 years ago with a 4th place finish at the Aussie Millions and a 2nd place finish at the Canadian Poker Championship.
This is what the college student, Shorr, reveals in his latest blog entry, though he still plans to play in some big name tournaments, specifically the mother of all tournaments - this summer's World Series of Poker.
"I guess I haven't played much poker in a while. I played last Wednesday and bricked the tournaments but made like 4 dimes playing LHE cash. I could really get used to this hardly playing poker. It's nice to be in a place financially where, honestly, I don't need to play much. I could handle just playing a little bit during the year and then really grinding my ass off just during the summers at the WSOP and during the Bellagio series when they arrive. I think I'll probably just take it easy until I finish school 15 months from now. Then, maybe I'll get into real estate, investing, trading, who knows? I'm not gonna wish school away too quickly. "
The frugal Shorr even got lured into buying a Bose sound system and some DVDs only because Circuit City was going out of business.
"I never ever buy myself anything and it takes a guy standing outside the store with a "Going Out of Business" sale sign to get me into the store. I settled on a pair of Bose noise canceling headphones, and iPod dock, and like 5 DVDs."
Shorr is notable for his success in poker tournaments, much of which occurred before his 21st birthday. Because 21 is the minimum legal age for gambling in almost all jurisdictions in the United States, Shorr was forced to go abroad to compete, where he cashed in several tournaments. He scored his first major payday with a fourth-place finish at the 2006 Aussie Millions tournament in Melbourne, Australia, where he won more than $200,000. During much of this time, Shorr was a civil engineering student at the University of Alabama.
He's won nearly $3 million in career live tournaments.
